School of engineering
The School of Engineering accommodates the largest group of students at the College, and serves to oversee all engine licensing programs. Within the School of Engineering are three academic departments offering five distinct Bachelor of Engineering degrees. These include: Electrical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture.
In 2008, Maritime College celebrated its centennial of marine engineering. This history began with the arrival of the USS Newport, a steam auxiliary built at Bath Iron Works, which became the College’s second training ship in 1908.
Mission Statement
After more than a century, the mission remains unchanged: We provide students with a strong analytical basis in engineering science, reinforced with major courses, and always connected to a hands-on, practical experience. The mission of the School of Engineering requires that every engineering student combine his or her academic studies with a practical, hands-on experience at applying the knowledge gained in the classroom and the laboratory. These experiences may come in the form of a very structured and demanding Summer Sea Term, or as an equally demanding Industrial Internship. These are a crucial component in a Maritime College engineering education.
