Although the fall semester is ending, 20 students will continue their studies this winter by participating in the Cadet Shipping program. The program provides cadets with real-time maritime industry exposure, practical work experience, and independent academic study in preparation for their final summer sea term in their first-class (senior) year.

Setting sail on December 14, students will work across the globe from the New York Harbor to Singapore. Companies including Crowley, Genesis Energy, McAllister and others will supplement the classroom training Maritime scholars receive with additional skills required to be successful merchant mariners. Aboard vessels, cadets will shadow officers, peform deck and maintenance duties, provide assistance in the engine room, or stand watch.

Taking part in the Cadet Shipping program for a second time, Cadet Nathan Gilmore, 2/C, will rejoin the Schuyler Line Navigation Company (SLNC) in Singapore. “I am very excited because I had such an amazing time with the Schuyler Line this past summer, and I am looking forward to refining my skills and gaining more experience.” He will contribute to the oil tanker SLNC Goodwill working on the deck for the Chief Mate and standing a bridge watch to complete his Person in Charge tanker endorsement.
