Texas Training Ship

Students from three State Maritime Academies (SMAs) - Massachusetts Maritime, Maine Maritime and Great Lakes Maritime – arrived at Olivet Pier on the Texas A&M Maritime Academy training ship, the General Rudder, on July 23. The stop at Maritime College was one of several ports along their 120-day sea term, coordinated by the Maritime Administration, in which cadets from various SMAs utilized the Texas A&M training ship to fulfill their sea time.

During their pier-side stay at Maritime College, students had a chance to tour the campus and explore its main highlights; Fort Schuyler, simulator labs, the Maritime Industry Museum, engineering labs, the Maritime Academic Center, and the various athletic facilities. On the tour with the students was 2nd Mate Kyler McGraw, one of 16 crew members aboard the General Rudder, who took in the views of NYC and the surrounding Long Island Sound. “We’ll return to Boston with a new group of students from the other SMAs on August 8, and then we’re off to Norfolk, VA, our final destination.” he said.
