New York State Scholarships

Excelsior Scholarship

The New York State Excelsior Scholarship is a state funded scholarship program designed to support full-time undergraduate students whose families earn less than $125,000 adjusted gross income (AGI) a year. The Excelsior Scholarship makes it possible for students to attend a SUNY school tuition-free. The Excelsior Scholarship is administered by Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). Further details are available here.

Students eligible for NYS Excelsior Scholarship must enroll in at least 12 credits per term and complete at least 30 credits each academic year (successively), applicable towards their degree program through continuous study with no break in enrollment. Courses that do not apply towards students' degree program, including remedial courses such as MATH 080 (or MATH 090 for certain programs), will not count toward the full-time status requirement or 30 credits earned minimum.

Eligibility Review

Recipients who do not meet the annual credit or continuous enrollment requirements due to one of the conditions indicated below may be able to retain their Excelsior Scholarship awards. If you meet any of the following conditions, please complete the Excelsior Eligibility Form and submit to our office to have your eligibility reviewed. Please note that documentation will be required. We will notify HESC if it is determined that you are eligible to receive your award.

You may be eligible to retain your award under the following conditions:

  • You experience a death of an immediate family member
  • You are called to active military duty
  • You interrupt your studies to take care of your new-born child (parental leave)
  • Your medical or health care provider determines that your medical condition or mental health prevents you from beginning or continuing the term or from continuing a full-time course load.
  • You interrupt your studies to care for an immediate family member, whose medical or heath care provider has determined to need additional support or care, which impacts your ability to begin or continue the term or from continuing a full-time course load.

Please be aware that other circumstances other than those indicated above may not allow you to retain your award under State laws and regulations.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

New York State awards a limited number of tuition scholarships to outstanding graduates of participating New York high schools for up to five years of undergraduate study at an in-state college or university. Recipients are selected based on students' scores on certain NYS Regents exams.

CADET APPOINTMENT PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIP (CAPS)

In recognition of the College's unique programs of study and proven career placement rate, the New York State Legislature has approved the Cadet Appointment Program (CAP) at Maritime College. The program allows elected officials to nominate qualified New York State residents from their district to attend the College and receive a four-year full-tuition scholarship for their undergraduate studies. It should be noted that the number of scholarships is limited by the annual funding Maritime College receives and availability of nomination by District each year.
