Award Determination

Current Plan

As of November 24, 2020, SUNY provided updated guidance for distributing the remaining student aid portion of the CARES Act of which we have an estimated $125,688 remaining. In order to spend the remaining funds, we have closed the application process and the College will distribute the remaining funds to 500 students - 231 who were enrolled in Spring 2020 receiving Title IV aid and are still enrolled for Fall 2020 but never completed a CARES application and 269 Pell Grant recipients enrolled this Fall 2020 semester. We will divide the remaining $125,688 by 500 and give each student $250.87 for the following purpose:

“In response to the coronavirus, funds have been made available through the CARES Act to award emergency grants to Title IV eligible students for expenses related to the disruption due to the coronavirus. Eligible expenses include food, housing, health care, childcare, transportation, technology and other course material.  The Campus had deemed you eligible to receive a CARES Act award of $250.87. This is not a loan and will not need to be paid back. These funds are for the following allowable expenses of food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, childcare, and/or transportation as a result of the coronavirus.”

Our Student Accounts Office will be processing CARES refund checks which students can expect to receive by end of December.

Previous Plan

SUNY Maritime College plans to award CARES Emergency Grants according to the following methodology based on two block grants that are consistent with federal regulations and SUNY Guidance:

CARES Base Grant of $470-670 awarded to all eligible students who incurred or anticipate to incur expenses such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and child-care expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to COVID-19.

  • $670 grants – awarded to students who have a FAFSA on file, demonstrate high financial need (Pell eligible), and are enrolled for Spring 2020 semester

  • $470 grants – awarded to students who have a FAFSA on file, demonstrate financial need, and are enrolled for Spring 2020 semester

Eligible Students will be invited to apply by email to complete the Certification and Attestation form for CARES Base Emergency Grant. Application deadline was August 6, 2020 however we are still accepting applications pending funding available.

CARES Enhanced Grant was awarded to eligible students for expenses already incurred, or anticipated to incur that are related to the disruption of campus operations due to coronavirus that are in excess of the Base Grant amount.

Eligible students who wished to apply for the enhanced grant should have filled out the Application for CARES Act Enhanced Emergency Grant. Students enrolled for Spring 2020 who wished to apply for the CARES Student Emergency Grant and did not have a FAFSA on file should have filed a 2019-2020 or 2020-2021 FAFSA. Application deadline was August 6, 2020.

In order to ensure an equitable distribution of funds, the maximum award a student can receive – when adding both the Base and Enhanced Grant – is $2,000.

Applying

Applications for Enhanced Grants will be evaluated by the Financial Aid Office, and may be approved or denied based upon whether the request in permissible under the CARES Act. The College reserves the right to request additional documentation and receipts as deemed appropriate. Disbursement of Enhanced Grant funding is contingent on funding availability.
