Students entering Maritime College are registered in an appropriate first course in mathematics and English. This initial registration is determined by placement testing, supplemented by other admissions information. Placement testing for Fall 2017 students will take place on June 8, 9, 10. Click here to register for on-campus placement testing, which also includes an opportunity for uniform fitting. (See below for the possibility of off-campus proctored exams or exemptions from one or both exams.)
For English placement, students are required to write a short essay, often on a topic of current interest. The essay will be graded on organization, paragraph structure, grammar, etc. Students can be placed into ENGL 090 Practice in Reading and Writing or ENGL 101 Freshman English I.
For math placement, students are required to take a multiple choice exam without use of a calculator.* The exam covers a wide range of high school math topics. Students can be placed in MATH 080 Elementary Algebra, MATH 090 Introduction to College Mathematics (essentially a College Algebra and Trigonometry course), or a 100-level Calculus course. Click here for a practice math exam (albeit not in multiple choice form).
If you are placed in a course preliminary to the standard initial course of your curriculum (ENGL 101 and, for most students, a 100-level Calculus course), your course sequence may be significantly affected, likely resulting in your needing additional time to complete your degree. Therefore: Please take the placement testing seriously and prepare by reviewing high school subject matter. You want your test performance to accurately represent your knowledge so that you are not placed in a preliminary course that was not truly necessary.
* If you currently have an Individualized Education Program (IEP) that allows for test accommodations … use of calculator, extra time, quiet space … please contact Mr. William Imbriale, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, firstname.lastname@example.org or (718) 409-7348, prior to your test date.
Proctored Placement Exams
Students living 65+ miles from the Maritime College campus can choose to have the placement exam proctored at their high school, community college, library, etc. The student will be responsible for obtaining a proctor who will administer the exam. This person must be a professional and cannot be a relative of the student. If you have questions about who can serve as a proctor, please don’t hesitate to contact Iana Neil, Admissions Counselor, at 718-409-7223 or email@example.com.
If you want to request a proctored exam, fill out the Proctored Placement Testing Registration Form and submit it by May 18.

You may be eligible for exemption from Math and/or English placement testing. Exemption is available to students who have already earned relevant college level credit (including via Advanced Placement).
